PEFC has published the standard PEFC ST 2102:2026 – PEFC Project Sourcing – Requirements, which sets out the requirements for certifying forest-based materials used in construction projects and buildings. The standard came into effect on 2 June 2026, with a transition period until 12 June 2028.
Certification of forest-based materials used in construction projects and buildings is based on the PEFC Chain of Custody (CoC) standard, which verifies the origin and traceability of materials used in these projects.
The use of timber in construction is growing rapidly as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Certifying forest-based materials used in construction can make a significant contribution to achieving climate goals. The largest timber construction project certified by PEFC is Expo 2025 Osaka, which used approximately 7,000 m³ of timber in its construction.
To obtain PEFC certification, a project must meet requirements including a minimum of 70% certified material content, supply chain control, origin verification, and record-keeping.
This standard helps promote the sustainable use of forest-based materials, enhance supply chain transparency, and support the development of a more responsible construction sector.
